The Fund was established after negotiations between the employer organisation and trade unions on Bargaining Council level..

The Fund originated due to various enquiries from members who preferred a Retirement Fund to a Pension Fund. The Retirement Fund is also registered in terms of the Pension Funds Act.

The date of inception of the National Fund for Municipal Workers was 1 June 1997, and from that date all employees had the option to become members of this Fund.
